That is a huge conflict of interest for a man giving advice to other men, being that his livelihood depends on women paying him. But let’s set that aside a moment… When I was separated from the first wife I met a woman through mutual friends. She was early 30’s (to my 38) and recently divorced. We chatted a bit since we were both new initiates to the post divorce crowd (I was still an apprentice) and hit it off. I’d only been separated a few months and had absolutely no intentions of “dating” so I really didn’t give it much thought. Fast forward a few months (and past my discovery of the Sphere) and we are chatting daily by text and it occurred to me that I really enjoyed her company. I had been married for almost 13 years and was never any good at dating to begin with, but I decided I wanted to escalate and see where it went. I figured it would probably fail but I had to start somewhere, and she seemed decent enough to at least not crush me with anything nuclear. Instead of a “wine and dine” date, I opted to include her on plans I had made previously to spend a long weekend at a friends cabin near the local ski resorts. The reasons are many, but near the top were limiting cost (as I was a single father with my children full time) and keeping things light and less formal while at the same time presenting a “date” of sorts that included some planning and effort, at least from an outside perspective. To make the story short it must have worked because we just had our second wedding anniversary this week. So guys, don’t take the advice presented to mean you should drop $200 on a meal out of the gate. But let’s be honest with ourselves: we could do much better than a dollar menu burger and a movie. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel for ideas, invite her to join some activities you are already involved in. It serves two purposes: 1. It won’t cost you much, or at least not much more than you were already going to spend. 2. It pulls her into YOUR world and YOUR frame instead of meeting on neutral ground, so to speak.
